The dynamic and role specific to the term “mom” has continually changed in our society especially within the past fifty years. Currently women are becoming dominating forces in many areas ranging from the workforce to politics and even the military. However, much of what we see depicted in the media does not match the stance women hold in present day society. I feel one of the most outdated and construed depiction of the female gender in media is what it means to be a mom. My artifact is a commercial for Motrin which suggests that moms need pain relievers to ease the discomfort from carrying their baby all day. The commercial suggests that “wearing” their baby in today’s society is a fashion statement and the more you hold your baby the less they will cry. The commercial states “I mean, I’ll put up with the pain because it’s a good kind of pain; it’s for my kid. Plus, it totally makes me look like an official mom. And so if I look tired and crazy, people will understand why.” This statement could be related to the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis; women viewing the commercial might interpret and be influenced by the thought that if they are not physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted they might be an inadequate mother.
